Drinking with the Pack – Family of Hounds Gin No.1

It was only four years ago when the ‘family’ of Family of Hounds tried their first G&T in the countryside in the UK. Needless to say, they fell in love with this quintessentially British drink and made it their mission to test several gins to experience the different flavours and botanicals.

They learned what they liked and what they didn’t, and after returning home to Monaco, they decided to take a huge leap into something new, something very exciting, and to start their own brand of spirits, the Family of Hounds.

The plan is to create a whole range of spirits, including two types of gin, a vodka, a vermouth and a grappa. Being Italian himself, grappa is a must for Andrea. So far, they have released their first bottle, Gin no. 1, which is still getting a slight makeover bottle-wise, but the liquid inside is ready, and oh my, is it delicious! There is a competition at the end of this post for you to join the family and win yourself a bottle!

Drinking with the Pack – Gin no. 1

This gin (and all their other future tipples) is made in Italy, with most of its botanicals actually coming from Italy. Gin no. 1 has nine botanicals: juniper (obvs!), lemon and orange peel, pink grapefruit, lavender, cardamom, ginger, coriander and thyme. It is a lovely balance of juniper, citrus and slightly spicy undertones. Personally, I am not usually a fan of cardamom in gins as it often overpowers the rest, but with this one, the flavour is subtle and enjoyable. All the botanicals are in perfect harmony, creating a well-balanced gin.

Other than G&Ts, this is a great gin for cocktails (check my Martini post for Family of Hounds-based Martini recipes!). Alternatively, I would also enjoy it on its own served with ice and orange peel or a sprig of thyme.
