First of all, yes, I actually like spirits. Neat, on the rocks, in cocktails – all of it. Growing up in Finland you cannot avoid getting exposed to the vodkas and other spirits from a politically incorrect early age. I believe we should understand each spirit the way some people understand wine, to learn the best ways to drink it, to indulge the smells, the colours and the flavours of the products. When I started On the Sauce Again, there simply wasn’t enough accessible, honest information about spirits out there. People were often a little afraid of the firewater – unsure how to drink it, what to look for when buying a bottle of Scotch, or why any of it even mattered. I wanted to change that.

It doesn’t help that some countries try to hide spirits from the public eye. In Finland, for example, they do not allow any advertisement or information to be available about alcohol spirits over 22% ABV. I feel there’s no need to hide the products, people just need to be educated more about them and how to drink responsibly as a result. There are university courses dedicated to wines, and craft beer has become a major trend so why not treat spirits with the same interest and give them a proper airing? The stories behind strong alcohol are so much more fascinating, and as there are many ways to drink them, they are anything but boring.

Discovering Spirits

I go to the source wherever possible. That might mean visiting an island distillery, digging peat straight from the ground, or sitting down with the people who dedicate their lives to producing these drinks.

I currently split my time between Italy and Scotland, which means I’m equally likely to be researching the best Negroni bars in Florence as I am tramping through a Scottish farm distillery in the rain. Hopefully, at the end of each journey I get to share a drink or two with the locals, and this way learn the true secrets of each drink.

My approach is to share what I genuinely find interesting, surprising, or worth your attention. The stuff that rarely makes it onto the label or into the standard tasting notes. I’m not here to sell you a lifestyle. I’m here because I find this world genuinely compelling, and I think you might too.

I taste spirits both as samples provided by brands and as bottles I buy myself. Where a product has been gifted or a trip sponsored, this is always clearly disclosed in the relevant post. My opinions are always my own.

I’ve worked in the hospitality industry for years and hold a degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management from Joensuu, Finland. I’ve lived and worked in several countries, including Thailand and Australia.

Favourite cocktail? Negroni. Or a Dry Martini with an olive.
On shots? I’d rather sip my tequila, thank you.
Current mood? Campari Spritz o’clock.
Best Finnish invention? Gin Long Drink in a can – gin with grapefruit soda, invented for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and still the country’s best-selling drink.
Random fact about me? I can’t pronounce “sushi.”

You can find me on LinkedIn or follow my spirits adventures on Instagram.

I hope you find something here that surprises you, teaches you something new, or at the very least gives you a good excuse to open a bottle. Feel free to comment, share, or get in touch – I’m always happy to hear from fellow enthusiasts.

Inka Larissa
